A dialogue at the threshold of Family, Ancestors, Culture and Home
by Jerome Kerner
Three principal themes are emphasized in the book:
The first is the impact of our Family of Origin on our physical home environment. This theory is explored through waking dream, guided visualizations, and the use of Genograms with specific reference to past familial dwellings.
The second is the use of Gestalt Therapy principles and practices as a way of creating a moment to moment (phenomenological) dialogue with your home. Through this dialogue you can see the present reality as a dream, and yourself as each part of the dream. In doing so you connect with the part of yourself that is expressed by the inanimate and accept or change the conditions.
The third principal theme springs from the Gestalt practice and is The Art of Intentional Living. How we take awareness and allow it to have a “ripple affect” through our lives. How we create consistency between philosophy and practice on a daily basis, and how to see perfection as an obstruction to happiness.
The book is timely since I think there is a need for self appraisal at this time in regard to home. We are seeing the two extremes of abundance creating McMansions and opulence, while others are struggling to make a home with minimal space. Both extremes would do well to evaluate and anchor their home environment to the reality of who they are and acceptance of what is.
